Save $15 when you buy Top Stocks 2012 with Sharebuyers Guide to Investing in the Australian Mining Boom
The Sharebuyer’s Guide to Investing in the Australian Mining Boom will help you evaluate which stocks in the mining sector have the best chance of outperforming the market.
Includes an A to Z (Aluminium to Zinc) of commodities and company profiles of 40 Emerging ASX-listed Resources Companies.
THE AUSTRALIAN MINING INDUSTRY is a major contributor to the national economy. The export revenues from the various metals and minerals mined from ‘The Lucky Country’ read like telephone numbers; make those international telephone numbers.
Dubious investors may be concerned whether what has become a hot sector of the Australian sharemarket will continue to show growth in 2011. Or has all the future value of high commodity prices already been priced into resources company share prices? For some resources stocks, the answer is yes: The values of some companies in this author’s opinion have become stretched. But for other resources stocks the answer is absolutely not: There are still spectacular share price gains around the corner for a number of resources stocks.

| Table Of Contents | A Sharebuyer’s Guide to Investing in the Australian Mining Boom begins with an introduction to investing in the Australian mining industry (Chapter 1). This provides a grounding to investors who wish to gain exposure to the sector – highlighting its importance to Australia’s economy. That the finances of our country survived the global financial crisis in very good shape, relative to other economies, is due in no small part to the rapid rebound of the resources sector – and of the commodity prices that drive our export earnings.
A specific look at exploration and exploration companies is the subject of Chapter 2. I explain the techniques that are in common usage to assist in discovering new mineral deposits, what constitutes exploration risk and how investors are rewarded for taking such risks; namely the investment opportunity that ASX-listed explorers present. The chapter finishes by highlighting a number of listed exploration companies as an invitation for readers to commence further research to identify those companies that have strong potential to deliver significant share price appreciation.
Chapter 3 follows a mineral discovery through to its next phase of development. It explains mining projects and highlights the importance of companies engaged in new project development, both in Australia and overseas. The subject of the capital cost of projects is discussed, as are the development challenges and risks facing such companies and their shareholders in the current financial and socioeconomic climate. The way in which investors can become ‘set’ through prudent selection of investments at the project development stage is also discussed – an opportunity for the patient investor rather than perhaps those seeking immediate return. The chapter finishes by drawing attention to selected Australian companies currently advancing mining projects, again as an invitation for investors to delve deeper into this area.
Chapter 4 focuses upon investment in mining companies and explains the choices available to investors in selecting small, mid-tier and larger companies. The chapter highlights the differences between mining companies and introduces the competencies mining companies require in order to be successful.
Financial considerations, including mining costs, financial statements, market valuations and hedging are introduced in Chapter 5. Investors are guided through the basics of each issue and forewarned about common misconceptions that can lead to poor investment decisions on their part. The aim is to equip you with knowledge that will allow you to spot value opportunities across the sector.
The pertinent topics of mineral taxation and mining royalties are discussed in Chapter 6 alongside a summary of the new Australian ‘Super Tax’ on iron ore and coal producers.
Commodity prices and price forecasting are the subject of Chapter 7 which includes a discussion of mineral demand and mineral supply in moving prices, coupled with the ever-increasing role of commodity investors as a further source of demand for selected minerals.
Specific investment techniques that have potential to make money by investing in the resources sector form the focus of Chapter 8, including a discussion of what to look for (and what to avoid) in initial public offerings (IPOs).
The book finishes with a raft of research material aimed at improving readers’ knowledge of the sector. These resources include selected commodity profiles (Chapter 9) and pen pictures of selected ASX-listed resources companies (Chapter 10) presented as a starting point to guide further research.
The book finishes with a range of Appendices which provide useful facts and additional links and resources to assist investors in further understanding the resources sector.
